Commentary

Right then, yet another exciting day in the 2023 World Cup and we have witnessed yet another commanding victory from South Africa and in their last four outings against Australia (including this one), they have won by 100 or more runs - won by 134 runs here, 5th ODI in Jo'burg won by 122 runs, 4th ODI in Centurion won by 164 runs and 3rd ODI in Potchefstroom won by 111 runs. Anyway, plenty more cricketing action to follow as next up New Zealand take on Bangladesh at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday, the 13th of October. That game will begin at 2 pm IST (8.30 am GMT) but you can certainly join us for the early build-up to that game. Till then, take care and goodbye!

The skipper of South Africa, Temba Bavuma says that 311 was above par and feels that 290-300 would have been a par score. Mentions that he is glad that they lost the toss as they wanted to chase. Feels that his inning was scratchy and credits Quinton de Kock for the way he batted. Mentions that it was a near-perfect game. Reckons that they could have finished well with the bat. States that the bowlers have been under slack but they dominated the Powerplay and in the middle phase as well. Also says that it is important to acknowledge the batting effort. Feels that character was pleasing to see. Ends by saying that despite the win, they want to find ways to get better and better as a team.

Australia's captain, Pat Cummins starts by saying that Quinton de Kock batted really well and adds that they could not get a breakthrough. Feels that it was a chasable target but it was hard work with the bat at night as it zipped around more than it did during the day. Shares that if they want to be challenged in this competition, it is important to find a way in all conditions. Feels that there is not much that needs to be said as everyone is hurt. Adds that they will look to regroup and turn up for the next game at this venue. Ends by saying that he cannot pinpoint but there are a few things that need to be tidied up.

Time for the captain's interviews...

Earlier in the game, Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to field first on a track that no one was really sure how it was going to play. This decision did not work out well as the Aussies were made to toil in the field and didn't pick up a single wicket in the first 10 overs. Quinton de Kock carried his form from the previous game and gave his side the perfect start. There were runs for South Africa throughout the batting order and even only Aiden Markram was the other batter than de Kock to get more than 50 runs, the valuable contributions meant they breached the 300-run mark yet again. Australia weren't as much lackluster with the ball as they were in the field and dropped more than a few crucial chances. Glenn Maxwell was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up a couple of wickets and was miserly as well. They did pull things back slightly in the death but did concede an above-par total. Coming to the chase, it was just one-sided and for the first time since 1992, Australia have lost both their opening games of a World Cup.

Quinton de Kock is the Player of the Match for his fantastic knock of 109 runs from 106 balls. He says that it is a great win and adds that they assessed the conditions well. Feels that coming into his game, it was important to stick to our strengths. Shares that he and Temba Bavuma assess the conditions upfront and convey the message to the rest of the guys. Mentions that they thought that the score was above par. Adds that since he has played for Lucknow in the Indian T20 League, he knew that the wicket gets harder to bat in the second innings irrespective of the dew. States that it has been only two games so far and it is important not to get too ahead of themselves.

AUSTRALIA HAVE BEEN TIMID - These are words used by former skipper Aaron Finch and surprisingly it seems accurate given how they have played in these first two games. It was a very sedate start from openers Mitchell Marsh and David Warner with the former just itching to get a big hit away. Marsh didn't get his timing right and fell early after which Warner too gave away his wicket. The likes of Steven Smith and Josh Inglis soon followed them back to the hut and Smith in particular would be disappointed as he started off in fine fashion. Then came a big moment in the game which might not have mattered much but will certainly be talked about for at least a few days. Marcus Stoinis was knicked off down the leg side but seemed to have the glove with which the ball made contact off the handle of the bat but a frozen frame on the replays gave the indication that it might be in contact and the third umpire gave him out. There was one partnership between Marnus Labuschagne and Mitchell Starc but by then, Australia had already lost the game. In the end, they didn't even manage to cross the 200-run mark for the second game running and have their work cut out for the future games.

South Africa will be ecstatic with that win over the Aussies and quickly, the Proteas are becoming one of the teams to beat in this competition. They had the runs on the board and then under lights, the frontline pacers made excellent use of the new ball. Lungi Ngidi in particular was brilliant up top and gave nothing away and Marco Jansen complemented him well and even got the first breakthrough for his side. Ngidi soon got into the wickets and got rid of David Warner. From there, South Africa were relentless and Kagiso Rabada came in and picked up a couple of quick wickets to press home the advantage. Rabada went on to pick up three wickets in total. They had the opposition reeling at 70/6 and were always a wicket away from clinching victory. They had to wait for a bit but eventually, everyone got into the wickets column and rounded off a sensational victory.

ANOTHER HUGE WIN FOR SOUTH AFRICA AND THEY ARE LIGHTING UP THE WORLD CUP! They have thrashed five-time champions Australia by 134 runs and their stranglehold on Australia in ODIs in recent times gets even tighter with a fourth straight 100+ run win. The Proteas also now join the likes of New Zealand, Pakistan and India on four points with two wins from two games. As for Australia, yet another disappointing outing and they now join the likes of Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Netherlands with two losses to start their campaign.

OUT! IN THE AIR AND GONE! Tabraiz Shamsi wraps up the innings! Offers flight and bowls it full, on off, Josh Hazlewood gets down on one knee and goes for a slog across the line. Does not get the proper connection and skies it high in the air. The ball goes only as far as short mid-wicket where Kagiso Rabada settles under the skier and completes the catch comfortably. Australia have succumbed to another defeat. South Africa win by a massive margin of 134 runs!

40.42

Fractionally short, around off, Josh Hazlewood goes back in his crease and pushes it wide of backward point. The fielder in the deep runs to his right and tidies it up. Hazlewood opens his account with a couple of runs.

Josh Hazlewood is the last man in.

40.3W

OUT! CAUGHT! Tabraiz Shamsi has his first World Cup wicket and Pat Cummins' stay at the crease comes to an end. Tosses this one up nicely, full and around off, inviting the big shot. Cummins has not much to lose here and decides to thump it down the ground but doesn't quite get to the pitch of the ball. Cummins ends up lifting it down to long off where David Miller takes a safe catch. South Africa just a wicket away now from sealing the deal here.

40.21

Flatter one, pushed through on the leg stump, worked away past square leg for a single by Adam Zampa.

40.10

Swing and a miss! Gives it a lot more air and loops it up on off stump. Adam Zampa looks to back away and loft it over extra cover but the ball beats him in the flight and turn, going over the stumps.

Powerplay 3! South Africa are now allowed as many as 5 fielders outside the inner ring but with just 2 wickets remaining, Temba Bavuma might not even need extra fielders out in the deep.

Commentary

Welcome back for the chase. The two umpires make their way out to the centre followed by two Aussie openers. The South Africans are in a huddle near the boundary ropes. It will be the right-hand and left-hand combination of David Warner and Mitchell Marsh to open the innings for Australia. Lungi Ngidi is at the top of his mark and is raring to go. Let's play...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, the game is nicely poised at the halfway mark. South Africa looked set to reach 350 at one stage but Kagiso Rabada and Co. will fancy themselves to defend the total. If Australia manage to chase down 312, it will be their highest successful chase in ODI World Cups. Join us in a bit to see how the chase unfolds.

Glenn Maxwell is down for a chat. He says that the first innings ebbed and flowed and South Africa looked to be getting to 350 but they were able to pull things back nicely in the last 10 overs. Adds that the boundaries were a bit bigger and he was able to use the pitch well. On Quinton de Kock, he says that he is a superstar and super consistent and just a brilliant player. Mentions that there might be a bit of dew later on and it has played much better than he expected, so, hopefully, it skids on nicely in the chase.

As far as Australia are concerned, they will be happy with how they tightened the screws in the last 15 overs or so. Opting to bowl first, they had hoped to make use of the moisture on offer with the new ball. However, it did not go according to plan for them, as the new ball attack of Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc were not able to deal the same damage as they did against India. It forced Cummins to bring Glenn Maxwell on in the powerplay, and the latter did keep things quiet, although without much support from the other end. Moreover, they were lacklustre in the field as well, which you do not expect from a side like Australia. The missed chances piled more misery on Pat Cummins and Co., as they were unable to put a squeeze on things in the middle phase. Australia sort of pulled things back with the wickets of Aiden Markam and Heinrich Klassen in quick succession and at the death, the pace trio used their skillsets smartly to keep South Africa to a gettable total.

What a final over by Mitchell Starc! South Africa fail to finish on a high but this is still a daunting total. After being inserted into bat, Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma were watchful in the first three overs. Out of the two batters, de Kock got used to the pace and bounce of the surface early and made sure to cash in on loose deliveries. Bavuma was happy to give the strike back to his partner and slowly got into the groove. The Proteas skipper was dropped thrice in his innings but eventually ran out of luck and was dismissed on 35. One of the centurions from the last game, Rassie van der Dussen, too, could not convert his start and got out on 26. Despite wickets falling at the other end, de Kock continued on his merry way and soon brought up his second successive hundred at this World Cup. After the southpaw's departure, Aiden Markam and Heinrich Klaasen got together and kept the momentum going for their side with a 66-run stand. When these two set batters were going great guns, it looked like South Africa would post more than eventually got but David Miller and Marco Jansen's inopportune departure meant they had to settle for 311.

Absolute class from Mitchell Starc and he ends the innings with another dot ball! keeps the pace up at over 140 clicks and gets it in the blockhole around off. Keshav Maharaj looks for the reverse ramp but the ball is just too quick and full and Maharaj cannot get any sort of bat on it. They do not run for the bye either and South Africa finish with 311/7!

49.50

Nails another yorker and just the leg bye of the final over so far. Comes from around the stumps now and angles in a wide yorker at over 140 clicks. Keshav Maharaj fails to get any bat on it.

Keshav Maharaj is the new batter.

OUT! TIMBER! Mitchell Starc knocks David Miller over and this is turning out to be a fantastic final over for Australia. Starc steams in, bends his back and bowls an inswinging yorker at around 144 clicks into middle and leg. Miller stays deep in his crease and tries to give himself a bit of room but the ball sneaks through and crashes into the stumps.

49.30

A wide yorker now at over 141 clicks, David Miller is early to back away and reaches out to squeeze it away but fails to get to it.

Leg bye! Full and quick, tailing into the toes, Kagiso Rabada fails to get any bat on it as the ball, goes off the legs to the right of the money. They do get a leg bye.

OUT! CAUGHT! This time it is taken! Mitchell Starc bowls it on a shorter length around middle, taking pace off it as well. Marco Jansen stays back and looks to pull but is late on it. The ball goes off the top edge and comes down toward mid on where David Warner takes a simple catch. Jansen departs after a handy cameo and Starc gets his first wicket of the game.

SIX! Oh, that has been SMOKED! Back of a length, angling across off, David Miller hangs back and clobbers it a long way in front of the mid-wicket fence for a biggie. It's going from bad to worse for Pat Cummins here.

48.41

DROPPED! What is happening out there? Pat Cummins bowls another pace of delivery, this time a bit fuller and around off. Marco Jansen tries to hit it out of the park but ends up slicing it high up in front of extra cover. Marcus Stoinis settles himself under it but the ball goes right through the bread basket and Cummins cannot believe it. Another single to Jansen then.

48.34

FOUR! Adding insult to injury and Pat Cummins won't be happy with that. Another good slower bumper that deceives Marco Jansen completely. Jansen though goes hard at it and gets enough of a top edge on it to take it over the keeper and into the fine leg fence. The 300 is up for South Africa.

48.21

DROPPED! Mitchell Starc with a valiant effort but he should have taken that. Good delivery from Pat Cummins as he bowls a slower bumper outside off. David Miller looks to take it on but is well undone and gets a top edge over backward square leg. Starc runs in from fine leg and dives in to pouch the ball but his elbows hit the ground hard and the ball pops out. A single is taken.

48.12

South Africa go for the review, not with conviction. The UltraEdge shows a spike as the ball makes contact with the handle of the bat. The bottom hand though is off the handle and is not touching the top hand but the third umpire thinks differently. The decision is overturned. Stoinis is in complete disbelief. He stays in the middle for a while, confirming and reconfirming with the on-field umpires. The replays get rolled again, this time though to only check if the catch was cleanly taken by de Kock. It's done clinically and Marcus departs shaking his head. Definitely a contentious decision. Australia are down and nearing yet another big loss. Stoinis, in the dressing room, is still having a look at the footage. The more we get to see the replays, it becomes clear that the bottom hand was very much away from the top hand.

Done with the pre-game formalities and it is now time to get the play underway! The two umpires are out in the middle and so are the players of Australia. It will be the pair of skipper Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock to open the innings for South Africa. Mitchell Starc is ready to steam in with the brand new ball. Two slips in place, let's play...

Minutes away from the first ball but first the two sets of players line up along with their mascots for their respective national anthems. It will be the national anthem of South Africa first followed by the Australian national anthem.

Temba Bavuma, the captain of South Africa says that he wasn't exactly sure what to do first. Informs that they have one change with Tabraiz Shamsi coming in for Gerald Coetzee and says that it is both because of the wicket and the vulnerability of the opposition against the slow bowlers. Adds that it is all about adapting to the conditions and Quinton de Kock and he will look to give their team a good start. Ends by saying that South Africa have started the tournament will and they will be a good challenge.

Australia's captain Pat Cummins says that they will bowl first. Feels that they were unsure of what to do and reckons that there will be moisture. Informs that there are two changes to the team with Marcus Stoinis coming in for Cameron Green and Alex Carey making way for Josh Inglis. Shares that they were a few runs short against India but he is happy with the way they bowled.

South Africa (Playing XI) - Quinton de Kock (WK), Temba Bavuma (C), Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi (In for Gerald Coetzee).

Australia (Playing XI) - David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis (WK) (In for Alex Carey), Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis (In for Cameron Green), Pat Cummins (C), Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood.

TOSS - Australia have won the coin toss and they have opted to BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Samuel Badree is pitchside. He says that it is hot and humid and the square boundaries are 63m and 70m on either side with the straight boundary being 76m. Matthew Hayden joins him and says that it is a relaid surface but the ground staff have done well to lay the grass on it and the new ball might do a bit more as it is a red soil surface and eventually, it might stop and turn. Adds that the surface is a bit tricky and might favour the bowlers more.

On the other hand, South Africa shattered several records and registered a resounding victory over Sri Lanka in their opening encounter. On a placid Delhi surface, centuries from Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen, and Aiden Markram powered them to a mammoth total, the highest in World Cup history. It was backed up by their bowlers, who took a beating early on but pulled it back and sealed the deal. A win in this game with a healthy margin might see the Proteas go to the top of the standings. However, it will not be easy, as the wounded Australian side will come hard at them. Will South Africa come out on top, or will Australia secure their first win? A lot will unfold as the toss and team news is not far away.

Australia, labelled as one of the favorites in any mega event, began their World Cup campaign with a defeat against India. They are coming off a disappointing batting effort that saw them rolled over for 199. David Warner and Mitchell Marsh will hold the key at the top of the order, as will Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschange in the middle phase. Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc were brilliant with the new ball, but the lack of wickets from Adam Zampa hurt them against India. If the relaid Lucknow surface offers support to the spinners, Zampa will be crucial for Australia.

Hello and a warm welcome, everyone! Match number 10 of the 2023 ODI World Cup is upon us, which sees Australia take on South Africa. Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow is all decked up to host its first-ever World Cup game, and it promises to be a cracker of a game between two top sides. Considering the recent meetings between these two sides, South Africa have a slight edge over Australia going into this encounter.

... MATCH DAY ...

The 2023 ODI World Cup bandwagon is about to make its debut in the 'City of Nawabs', Lucknow, as Australia and South Africa square off in match number 10 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium. With the second round of fixtures coming to an end with this clash, the World Cup has started to take shape. As we had seen during the Indian T20 League, the surface at Lucknow was sluggish, which meant that the spinners ruled the roost. Prior to the World Cup, the surface had been relaid, and it will be interesting to see how it plays now. Australia come into this game on the back of a tough defeat against the host nation, India, in their campaign opener. In what was a trial by spin from India, the Aussie batters surrendered themselves and were bowled out for 199. With the ball, they had India in a precarious position early on but let them off the hook to end up on the losing side. As Pat Cummins' men aim to bounce back and get off the mark in the World Cup, they cannot afford to have another flop show with the bat. David Warner and Steven Smith got into the forties against India but were unable to convert it into something substantial. Being most experienced in Indian conditions, Warner and Smith will have to do the bulk of the scoring for Australia. The likes of Mitchell Marsh, Marnus Labuschagne, and Glenn Maxwell will be expected to bat around the two senior batters. Cameron Green is going through a lean patch with the bat in ODI cricket, and we might see him being replaced by Marcus Stoinis. In the pace department, Pat Cummins was unlucky not to get to a wicket, but Josh Hazlewood had the ball on a string, as did Mitchell Starc. What did not help their cause was the ineffectiveness of Adam Zampa, and he will be eager to produce an improved bowling display. On the other hand, South Africa are off to the best possible start in the World Cup with a thumping win over Sri Lanka. Thanks to centuries from Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen, and Aiden Markram, South Africa posted the highest total in ODI World Cup history. In reply, Kusal Mendis fought a lone fight, but the Proteas bowling attack proved too good for the Lankans. In what was a perfect effort with the bat for South Africa, Temba Bavuma was the only batter to have been dismissed for a single-digit score. As a result, the Proteas skipper will be keen to get up and running in the World Cup. Marco Jansen did account for the two Lankan openers, but once the ball got old, he was taken to the cleaners. Keeping in mind the left-handed angle Jansen brings, he is likely to keep his spot in the side and will be expected to pull up his socks. Before travelling to India for the mega event, these two sides faced off in an ODI series in the Rainbow Nation, where South Africa clinched the series from a 0-2 deficit. Will South Africa manage to make it two wins out of two? Or will it be Australia to collect their first points of the World Cup? We will find out soon enough.
