Commentary

Right then, that wraps up this rain-curtailed game, with Kolkata securing two vital points and becoming the first team to qualify for the playoffs, while Mumbai face their 9th loss of the season. Looking ahead, brace yourselves for an exciting doubleheader Sunday on the 12th of May in the Indian T20 League. The action kicks off with Chennai hosting Rajasthan in the first game at 3.30 pm IST (10 am GMT), followed by Bengaluru taking on Delhi in the second game at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT). Do join us back early for all the pre-match buildup. Until then, it's cheers and goodbye!

Varun Chakaravarthy is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his game-changing spell. He says that the plan against Rohit Sharma was to make him hit across the line. Shares that he and Sunil Narine are tactically similar but technically different. Feels that the wickets were too flat initially but he has not changed his bowling much from the first game and he is now reaping the rewards.

Shreyas Iyer, the skipper of Kolkata says that there were nerves and they have been playing well and the boys have put up their hands and this game is a testament to the character of this side. Adds that after losing the toss they had the mindset of winning the game from anywhere and after the strong Powerplay it was great to pull things back in this fashion. Talks about giving the extra over to Varun Chakaravarthy and backing Harshit Rana for the final over and says that he sticks to his instincts and both were tremendous which is why he backed them to get the job done for the side.

It's time for the Presentation Ceremony...

Andre Russell is in for a chat. He says that they batted first and therefore they knew that the ball was sticking in the surface. Mentions that it was a good enough total and it was about utilising the boundary dimensions. Feels that the bowlers won them the game. Shares that he enjoyed the challenge of bowling to Suryakumar Yadav. Adds that it was about keeping things as simple as he could against Suryakumar. States that the more cricket you play, it becomes easier. Further says that he has been working extremely hard on his fitness and he is happy to perform the role given by the team management. Tells that he likes doing as much talking as he can and the youngsters have been eager to learn.

Mumbai's skipper, Hardik Pandya says that it is a tough defeat. Says that the foundation was there but not capitalising on it cost them the game. Shares that the wicket was up and down and it was important to keep the momentum up. Feels that the score was par and the bowlers did a pretty good job. When asked about the approach to the remaining games, he replies that they need to go and enjoy themselves and play good cricket, which they have not done enough this season.

Earlier in the innings, the Mumbai pacers utilized every bit of assistance from the moist deck, dismissing the destructive openers upfront and putting Kolkata on the back foot. Despite the early setbacks, Venkatesh Iyer stood firm against the pace assault and forged a solid partnership with Nitish Rana, who couldn't quite shift into top gear before both were eventually dismissed. Andre Russell provided some respite with a flurry of aggressive strokes, but Kolkata struggled to maintain momentum, losing wickets at regular intervals. Jasprit Bumrah and Piyush Chawla emerged as the standout bowlers for Mumbai, claiming two scalps each, while Anshul Kamboj also made valuable contributions with the ball to restrict Kolkata to 157 runs at the end of 16 overs which turned out to be too much for Mumbai.

With their backs against the wall, Kolkata didn't start the way they intended to with the ball in hand. The pacers leaked runs in the Powerplay, and options for taking wickets seemed out of reach. It was Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy who stemmed the flow of runs and provided the much-needed breakthrough. Subsequently, the pacers tightened their lines and secured a couple more crucial wickets, opening the door for Kolkata to make a comeback. The extended spell of Varun Chakaravarthy proved to be a masterstroke for skipper Shreyas Iyer, as he dismissed the Mumbai skipper, after which it was all about maintaining the momentum, a task the pacers executed exceptionally well. Harshit Rana held his nerve well in the last over and claimed two wickets. Although, it was Varun Chakaravarthy's spell of 2 for 17 off 4 overs which stood out for Kolkata.

It's been a remarkable turnaround for Kolkata as they claw their way back into this nail-biter of a game, securing two vital points and becoming the first team to qualify for the playoffs. This match epitomizes Mumbai's season as they suffer their 9th loss. After a promising end with the ball, Mumbai's openers immediately seized control, effortlessly finding boundaries at will. The chase seemed well within reach, highlighted by a formidable 65-run partnership between Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan. However, their momentum faltered when spin entered the fray, leading to the quick dismissals of both openers and momentarily stalling the chase. Despite efforts from Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma to stabilize, Mumbai's fortunes plummeted with Suryakumar's departure, followed swiftly by skipper Hardik Pandya's dismissal, leaving their hopes shattered as wickets continued to fall. Although Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir made valiant attempts to revive the innings, the target proved insurmountable following the loss of crucial wickets in the middle overs.

Commentary

We are back for the second essay. Shreyas Iyer leads his troops out to the middle and the players of Kolkata take their respective field positions. As expected, Rohit Sharma comes in as the Impact Player for Mumbai, replacing Nuwan Thushara. Rohit strides out to open the innings alongside Ishan Kishan. Kolkata's Impact Player, Vaibhav Arora comes in for Nitish Rana. Vaibhav has the new ball in hand and he is raring to go. Let's play...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, the game is nicely poised at the halfway mark. Mumbai will be confident enough to gun down this total and they have the resources to get over the line. On the other hand, Kolkata will be looking to make the new ball count and will be on the hunt for early inroads. What should help their cause is that the temperatures have gone down due to the rain, which should keep the dew away. Back in a bit for what should be an interesting second half of the game.

Hardik Pandya will be pleased with his side's bowling effort given the batting might of Kolkata. Considering that the surface was under covers, Mumbai had a real shot of using the moisture to get rid of the explosive Kolkata openers. Nuwan Thushara and Jasprit Bumrah did just that before Anshul Kamboj got into the act and removed the Kolkata skipper. Hardik Pandya went for plenty in his three overs whereas the leggie, Piyush Chawla got the big wickets of Venkatesh Iyer and Andre Russell. Before removing Russell, it was a moment of brilliance in the field from Tilak Varma that saw them get rid of Nitish Rana. Nuwan Thushara and Jasprit Bumrah got together and closed out the innings well to keep Kolkata to a manageable total.

A maximum of the last ball and that takes Kolkata past 155! Not the desired last couple of overs for the hosts but this is not a bad score either. Inserted into bat, Kolkata were rocked early, losing Phil Salt and Sunil Narine inside the first 7 legal balls. Venkatesh Iyer showed intent right from ball one and even after losing Shreyas Iyer early, he ensured that the boundaries kept coming from one end. Nitish Rana was slow to get off the blocks but that wasn't the case with Andre Russell. Rana survived a LBW scare but ran himself out before he could get into the top gear and Russell followed him back into the hut soon after. Their departures left Rinku Singh and Ramandeep Singh with the job of providing the final flourish and losing two quick wickets dented Kolkata's finishing with a bigger total. However, Rinku's 20 and Ramandeep's 17-run cameo helped Kolkata cross 155.

SIX! Wow, that's some shot from Ramandeep Singh to help Kolkata reach 157 runs. Jasprit Bumrah comes from over the wicket and lands this just fuller of a good length and into middle and leg, Ramandeep Singh opens up his stance and clears his front leg before clubbing it over long on for a maximum.

15.51

Goes full and angles this into middle and leg, Mitchell Starc flicks it to deep square leg for a single.

15.41

Executes the perfect yorker again into the stumps, Ramandeep Singh just jams it down to long on for just a single.

15.31

Bowls a low full toss on off stump line, Mitchell Starc pushes it to cover and gets off strike.

Mitchell Starc walks in next.

15.2W

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Jasprit Bumrah gets his second and Mumbai are all over Kolkata! Comes from over the wicket and angles this away on a fuller length, outside off, Rinku Singh throws absolutely everything at it but only manages to get a thick outside edge to the left of the keeper. Ishan Kishan takes a couple of steps to his left and grabs the ball around his shoulders. 100th catch in T20 cricket for Ishan Kishan. 20th wicket of this edition of the Indian T20 League for Bumrah and he is now the joint-most wicket taker.

15.11

Starts well does Jasprit Bumrah! Darts a yorker into middle and leg, Ramandeep Singh eases it to square leg and sprints to the other end.

Who will bowl the last over? It will be Jasprit Bumrah (3-0-29-1). Can he keep Kolkata under 160?

14.51

Goes full and outside off, Ramandeep Singh gets low and runs it down to third man for a single.

14.51wd

WIDE! Hits the shorter length and bowls it well outside the tramline on off. The umpire calls it a wide and Hardik Pandya sends it upstairs for a check. The replay confirms that the ball was well outside the guideline and the onfield call of WIDE is withheld.

14.44

FOUR! A top edge and Kolkata will take it all! Nuwan Thushara goes full and well outside off, Ramandeep Singh gets down on a knee and extends his arms looking to play it along the ground and across the line. The ball catches the top edge of the blade and flies over the keeper towards the fine leg fence for a boundary.

14.31

Another sharp yorker and this is turning out to be a great over! Tails in the yorker and attacks the stumps, Rinku Singh opens the bat face and digs it to the off side for a single.

14.21

Goes full and lands it outside off, Ramandeep Singh just opens the bat face and tucks it to deep backward point for a single.

13.56

SIX! Wow, that's a top, top shot from Rinku Singh! Hardik Pandya overpitches this into middle and leg, Rinku Singh gets low and picks the length to perfection using his bottom hand and flicks it over square leg for a maximum.

13.40

Takes pace off and bowls this wider of off, and on a good length, Rinku Singh gets deceived by the pace off and looks to cut it and is beaten on the outside edge.

13.31

At 139.3 kph, tries to bowl the yorker into the stumps, but ends up being a very low full toss which is tucked well to deep mid-wicket for a single by Ramandeep Singh.

13.22

Bowls it fuller this time around off stump line, Ramandeep Singh tucks it with soft hands in front of long on and squeezes a couple of runs.

13.11

Comes from over the wicket and angles this away on a shorter length, outside off, Rinku Singh just helps it on its way towards deep third for a single.

Strategic break! Mumbai have bowled well until now, but finishing well and keeping Kolkata to a manageable total will be a real challenge. The visitors have struggled with the ball during the death overs, and it will be interesting to see how they fare given the boundary dimensions at this venue. Kolkata have been pegged back with the loss of both set batters. The onus is now on the newly arrived Rinku Singh to give his side the finishing kick. Ramandeep Singh joins him out in the middle and he too can hit the long ball. Hardik Pandya brings himself back into the attack.

Anshul Kamboj in the deep settles right under the ball and does really well to take this skier with a reverse cup around his face. Mumbai are now well and truly ahead in the game!

12.51

Serves a googly, flat and short, on off, Rinku Singh makes room and chops it to deep point for a single.

Back of a length, over middle, Naman Dhir goes deep in his crease to heave it away. Gets a top edge that goes high in the air and only as far as deep mid-wicket where Rinku Singh settles under it and does the rest.

With Mumbai needing 22 off the last over, who will Shreyas Iyer go to? The skipper throws the ball to Harshit Rana! Can he defend this?

UPDATE - 8.16 pm IST (2.46 pm GMT) - More news from the centre! We are going to have an official inspection at 8.45 pm IST (3.15 pm GMT).

ICYMI - Earlier in the day, England's James Anderson announced his decision to retire from international cricket on social media. Anderson will bid farewell to the sport after England's first Test against the West Indies in July at Lord's, concluding a remarkable 21-year-long international career. As the first and currently the only pacer to claim 700 Test wickets, the veteran pacer has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the sport.

UPDATE - 7.54 pm IST (2.24 pm GMT) - Great news folks! The weather seems to have cleared and the covers are now coming off. Live visuals depict players and their support staff eagerly waiting near the fence for all the covers to be taken off, allowing them to proceed with their warm-up drills. Stay tuned for further updates.

UPDATE - 7.36 pm IST (2.06 pm GMT) - Good news! The rain seems to have subsided, and the ground staff are making their way out to the middle. They are about to start the process of removing the water from the covers before taking them off. Moreover, the drainage system at Eden Gardens is one of the best in the country, so it should not take long for the ground staff to get the field ready for play, provided the rain stays away. Stick around for more news.

UPDATE - 7.29 pm IST (1.59 pm GMT) - Uh oh! The covers are still firmly in place as the rain continues to pour down. With about an hour left before overs start getting deducted, we're keeping our fingers crossed for the weather to clear up soon. Stay tuned for further updates.

UPDATE - 6.58 pm IST (1.28 pm GMT) - Unfortunately, we have some dampening news, as the live visuals indicate that it is currently raining and the entire ground has been covered. As a result, the coin toss is likely to be delayed. And yes, we have official confirmation now that the flip of the coin has been delayed due to RAIN. Let's hope that the weather clears up soon.

On the other hand, it has been a forgettable season for the five-time champions, Mumbai. The change in leadership, with Hardik Pandya at the helm, hasn't borne fruit, as they were the first team to be eliminated from playoff contention. With Rohit Sharma returning to his happy hunting ground, he will be eager to rediscover his form, especially with the T20 World Cup approaching, as will Hardik Pandya, whose bowling is slowly starting to fall into place. While Jasprit Bumrah has stood out in the bowling department, Mumbai will require contributions from Nuwan Thushara and Piyush Chawla if they are to end the season on a positive note. Is there still a fight left in Mumbai? Can they hand Kolkata a defeat and make them wait longer for their playoff qualification? Stick around to find out.

With 8 wins from 11 games, the table-toppers Kolkata have one foot in the playoffs, and a win against Mumbai would secure their spot. Riding a three-game winning streak, they have already defeated Mumbai earlier in the season. Sunil Narine and Phil Salt have been the mainstays of their batting lineup, setting the tone with their aggressive approach. The Iyers, Venkatesh, and Shreyas have also put their hands up at various stages of the competition. In addition to his batting prowess, Narine has been effective with the ball, alongside his spin partner Varun Chakaravarthy. While Mitchell Starc had a slow start, he has found form at the right moment for Kolkata, with Harshit Rana and Andre Russell also delivering with the ball in the last match.

Hello and a warm welcome, folks from Kolkata, for one final time in the 17th edition of the Indian T20 League. In a clash of two teams at opposite ends of the spectrum, Kolkata take on Mumbai at the iconic Eden Gardens in match number 60 of the 2024 Indian T20 League. Kolkata find themselves on the verge of playoff qualification, whereas Mumbai are in a battle to avoid finishing at the bottom of the table. Adding to the intrigue, the weather is a bit uncertain, but let's remain hopeful that the rain stays away.

... MATCH DAY ...

As we close out another exciting week in the Indian T20 League 2024, the competition for the Top 4 spots is really heating up, making this phase of the tournament even more crucial. Match number 60 is shaping up to be another thrilling affair, with plenty of nail-biting moments guaranteed. Eden Gardens, hosting its final match of the season, is all set to welcome the home team Kolkata, who currently sit at the top of the table, as they take on Mumbai. Kolkata has climbed to the top of the table, surpassing Rajasthan, thanks to their superior net run rate which leapfrogged after they thumped Lucknow by 98 runs. Meanwhile, this has been a tough season for Mumbai overall who find themselves at the second-to-the-bottom and the first team to be eliminated this season. Kolkata's batting lineup has been on fire, and a big part of that success has been the explosive form of Sunil Narine and Phil Salt at the top. Their thunderous starts have really taken the pressure off the middle-order batters. Reinstating Narine as an opener has proven to be a stroke of genius for Kolkata, and players like Venkatesh Iyer and Shreyas Iyer in the middle order have also been delivering consistently. Even though Rinku Singh hasn't had many chances to showcase his talent with the bat, there's no doubt he's just dangerous when he gets going. Then there's the brute force of Andre Russell and his all-round abilities to the rescue. Phew, no respite for any bowler whatsoever. Not just in batting but also the bowlers have troubled the opposition batters. Varun Chakaravarthy and Harshit Rana have been delivering consistently, adding strength to the bowling lineup. Despite Mitchell Starc's performance being somewhat average, his left-arm pace remains a potent threat. With such all-round consistency, Kolkata will be eager to secure another win, especially against Mumbai. In contrast, Mumbai's blue and gold squad has faced numerous challenges this season and hasn't quite found their rhythm. Hardik Pandya and his Mumbai teammates have found themselves consistently struggling near the bottom of the table this season, securing only four wins so far. Now that their chances of qualifying are slim, they might use the remaining matches to try out new combinations, testing the bench strength, and focusing on building for the future. However, they're determined to win every remaining game and play with pride. One of Mumbai's major challenges has been its unstable opening pair. Rohit Sharma's recent form slump and Ishan Kishan's struggles with the bat have disrupted the team's batting lineup. While Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma have been dependable, the finishers haven't quite lived up to expectations. Although Nehal Wadhera has shown potential, more is expected from players like Tim David and Hardik Pandya with the bat. However, Hardik Pandya, the bowler has shown improvement in recent matches by consistently contributing with the ball, which is encouraging. Piyush Chawla, the experienced campaigner, has provided crucial breakthroughs, and of course, there's the ever-reliable Jasprit Bumrah, who remains one of the best bowlers in the format. Despite having such talent in their squad, Mumbai has struggled to achieve the desired results this season. Now, coming to Eden Gardens Mumbai will be aiming to get back to winning ways whereas Kolkata would want two more points and further solidify their first place. An exciting contest up on cards, who are you supporting?
